  • Domestic Violence Awareness Month Series: Domestic Violence on The Rise

    Hello Readers,

It's Domestic Violence Awareness month and according to ABC 4 News (Salt Lake City), Police want victims to know about the resources available.

Officers and women's advocates are seeing an alarming trend of increased domestic violence and violence toward women. Last year, the Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office received about 8,000 calls because of domestic violence.

According to ABC 4 News (Salt Lake City), "In 2008, 22 people died from domestic violence related issues. Experts say the struggling economy is contributing to the influx in domestic violence cases."

Officers say there has also been increased violence committed in front of children. Advocates say we all need to do our part to stamp out domestic violence.

We can do that by paying attention to our friends, family and co-workers, asking questions, an by calling police if we suspect something is going on.

Salt Lake City Women's Organizations and the Police Department want to relay that there are many resources for victims and the abuser, please call: Domestic Violence Crisis Line at 1-800-897-5465. or go online to http://www.udvac.org/

To Kick Off Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Salt Lake City:

To kick off National Domestic Violence Awareness Month this October, The Allstate Foundation asks Salt Lake City residents to Tell a Gal P.A.L. (Pass It On, Act & Learn) and talk openly about domestic violence and how economic empowerment can provide a path to a safe future.

Salt Lake City residents are also encouraged to donate women’s suits or professional attire at select Allstate agencies, as part of the Tell a Gal P.A.L national donation drive. The donated suits will be given to Utah shelters to help outfit domestic violence survivors with confidence as they enter or re-enter the workforce and get back on their feet financially. Nearly new suits and professional attire that are cleaned and interview-appropriate will be accepted.

The public can log onto ClickToEmpower.org to find a list of participating Allstate donation locations.

    My Thoughts:

Wow! This is such great programming. I am super excited for Salt Lake City and how they are taking a stand to stop domestic violence. They not only offer resources for the victims, but the abuser as well. Allstate is taking a stand this month and starting a program to empower women who have been in domestic violence and helping them find the confidence they need to re-enter the workforce and get back on their feet after a tramautizing experience.

I hope this helps someone, please help Support Domestic Violence Awareness Month!
