Domestic Violence Awareness Month Series: "Death of A Dream"
Hello Readers,
Domestic Violence Awareness Month has brought out amazing campaigns and even greater personal stories of struggle.
Spotlighting: "Death of a Dream", a play written by Bronx Native, Nancy Genova
Place: Bronx, NY, Off-Broadway
According to NYDailyNews.com, " Genova spent years helping victims of domestic violence before she understood that she was in an abusive relationship herself""I began to recognize that things I saw with my clients were happening to me," Genova said.
Nancy Genova is a Bronx social worker who is fighting domestic violence by putting her story out there with her new off-broadway play, " Death of a Dream."
According to the NYDailyNews.com, " Her play, "The Death of a Dream," dramatizes not only the damage domestic abuse wreaks on its victims and their families, but also the conflicted feelings that lead women to deny the problem and even return to their tormenters."Sometimes it can take eight interventions before they stop going back," said Genova, who runs social service programs for Bronx-Lebanon Hospital."One of my clients gave me a vision of what I faced if I stayed in my relationship," said Genova about the fateful encounter 10 years ago.
The woman seemed smart and successful, but her family was falling apart, and she was in the hospital with a severe head wound.
Genova wrote about her experience in order to cope with the pain, but she found that even after she escaped her abusive marriage, the pain was still strong."Once you've been the victim of trauma, it always stays with you - it becomes part of you," Genova said. "You can overcome it, but it never leaves you."
While writing about her experience she understood why she stayed so long and denied to herself what was happening."I actually wrote the play a while ago," said Genova, "but I wouldn't let anyone see it - it's so intimate.According to NYTimesDailyNews, "She finally shared the script with a friend, who showed it to her husband - Obie-award-winning director Frank Perez. He looked into having the play staged, and actress Rhina Valentín, also a producer, stepped forward to finance the production and take a starring role as one of the three main character.
"After the run here in New York, she wants to take it to college campuses," said Genova.
Also staring are TV and film actress April Lee Hernández-Castillo, and noted spoken-word artist and singer Caridad De La Luz.
"The Death of a Dream" runs Friday through Nov. 8 at the Roy Arias Theater Center,
Location: 300 W. 43rd St. at Eighth Ave.

If you are in the NY Area, please take the time to support Nancy Genova's personal story and struggle with Domestic Violence. This would be a good opportunity to experience first-hand someone's vulnerability to an audience. I hope that this place does well, and I wish Miss Nancy great success!
